Picking Up Trash is Cool!

Unfortunately there are 50 Billion pieces of litter along U.S. roadways and waterways. With waterways (25.9B) slightly edging out roadways (23.7B).

Will this make an impact? Probably not.

I have been running a lot this summer and usually do the same 7 mile loop. Run after run I would notice more and more trash along the route. I’m Always picking up trash at the beach. Why couldn’t I do my part around the neighborhood? So my hippy ass got a trash grabber, bag, and hopped on my electric bike.

Grab. Grab. Grab

It was very interesting to see how much shit is funneled towards the storm drains. Cig butts, plastic caps, cans, and a everything else that could get pricked up with some water. Ditches and storm drains do not connect to a treatment system, so everything that flows down the drain goes directly to the nearest water body, ultimately flowing into the ocean. The storm drainage system is separate from the sewer system.

Shit happens and people fuckin suck…. A terrible combo. So what can we do as a whole to lower these numbers? Should there be bins on every street corner? Educate people more about this issue at a young age? Rally some people together for clean ups? Seems like no one has a solution for now. So next time you see some trash, grab it, and toss that shit. Who knows, maybe you save a fish. You eat enough sushi anyways.
